The true value of life

The true value of life is not found in riches or fame, it is found in the simple finer things in life like, love, peace & happiness.
When I was younger, I thought I had to do or be involved with something really big to make a difference and spread peace, love & happiness. Now I believe that I have the ability to create all that every day with every person I come in contact with. I believe the little things matter just as much as the big ones. Rather than feeling like a victim of policies and politicians, I choose to remain an active positive force in helping to heal the world. You and I can heal the world.

Gono, US dollars do not grow on trees.

Zimbabwe has for the past four months and still is using the (reserve)international trading currency which is the US dollar, to price their goods and services. This is a result of the hyper-inflation in the country which has reached a world record high and makes the Zimbabwean dollar practically worthless as a currency to do business with. Using the US dollar to price goods and services is good for the business people but very bad for most consumers whose employers pay them in Zimbabwean dollars. The governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, Gono, should have given a directive to all employers to start paying their employees in US dollars first before allowing the business people to price their goods and services in US dollars.
Right now ordinary Zimbabweans are faced with a situation whereby they are being paid in worthless Zimbabwean dollars and yet are expected to pay their rent, their transport, buy all their food, pay for school fees, hospital fees and medicine in US dollars. Where does the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor expect the ordinary Zimbabweans to get the US dollars from, is he aware that the US dollars do not grow on trees. Ordinary Zimbabweans were already suffering economically before this policy of using US dollars was put in place and putting it in place when most of them are paid in Zimbabwean dollars was like putting salt on a wound, adding more suffering to an already suffering people. This shows just how cruel, insensitive and indifferent Gono is to the suffering of ordinary Zimbabweans. His allowing pricing of goods and services to be done in US dollars when most people are paid in Zim dollars has increased poverty, hunger and deaths in the country and made reaching one of the NEPAD millenium goals of poverty reduction very far from being possible in this country. You might be wondering why the ordinary Zimbabweans can not just use their Zim dollar salaries to buy the needed US dollars from the foreign currency dealers which can be found at every street corner in the city. The reason they can't do that is because the maximum money withdrawal from the bank, that Gono set as the limit per person, per day is not enough to buy an adequate amount of US dollars.

Sometimes people wonder whose interests Gono is really serving. He definately is not for making life economically managable for ordinary Zimbabweans, nor is he for Mugabe because if he was he would come up with policies that would at least make people lessen their swearing on Mugabe's government. He is always setting policies that cause ordinary Zimbabweas to become so hungry, frustrated and angry and had Zimbabweans not been so passive and docile as they are would cause them to do a spontaneous uprising. Maybe that is his motive when setting up his policies. Such a mentality of thinking that the Zimbabwean solution lies in making the ordinary Zimbabweans suffer so much that they can't tolerate it any more and have no option but to vent their anger and frustrations through an uprising to overthrow Mugabe is the kind of mentality that Tsvangirai also believes in. This is why some Zimbabweans think that maybe Mugabe trusts Gono not knowing that he may actually be working against him by trying to provoke people to revolt because of his policies that make life for ordinary Zimbabweans intolerable. Personally I am against this mentality of trying to use the suffering of ordinary Zimbabweans to gain political mileage. What frustrates most Zimbabweans is that all the so called GNU leaders who are supposed to stand up as leaders of the country and make right such irregularities in the economy that are causing profound suffering to the ordinary Zimbabweans are doing absolutely nothing about it. As these leaders are themselves cushioned from this suffering by thier fat foreign currency accounts they pretend not to notice the fatal economic war that Gono is waging on poor ordinary Zimbabweas with his harsh, unfair and unfriendly policies.

Last time I heard, this use of US dollars by Zimbabwe is without permission from the Federal Reserve Bank of America. The issue that doesn't augur well with the Federal Reserve is the way Zimbabwe has devalued the US dollar when using it within Zimbabwe. In simple terms the value of a hundred US dollar bill when used to buy goods in USA or any other country for that matter is much more than when it is used to buy goods in Zimbabwe. That is highly irregular because the fact that the US dollar is the reserve currency or international trading currency means that it is a stable currency that has the same value the world over. The Zimbabwean business people who are pricing their goods in US dollars are not taking into consideration this fact. They are increasing their US dollar prices weekly just as they used to do when they were pricing in Zim dollars and on top of that the prices are factoring in too high a profit margin.

So dear readers, I suppose you now understand what I mean when I say that this country, Zimbabwe is in a total mess, not only does the political situation in the country not make sense but the economic situation is out of this world, it doesn't follow any proven and accepted rules of economics.
DEAR LORD, DELIVER ME FROM THIS COUNTRY.

  1. Thank you for bringing that issue up Eusebia. I have just been reading Denford Magora's blog, in his article entitled, Arthur Mutambara's Blunder, he said, "Workers, including construction company workers are now being paid in US dollars," and that statement is untrue. It could have been correct if he had said that, "Some workers are now being paid in US dollars, for example such and such a construction company."(providing the name of the consrution company) His statement made it seem as if all workers are now being paid in US dollars, yet that is not true at all, most workers are still being paid in Zimbabwean dollars. Most Zimbabweans are still struggling to get the US dollars that they need to survive in a dollarised economy.
The Zimbabwean economy has been dollarised so that the shops in Zimbabwe can be filled up with the much needed goods that had become scarce and that is not bad at all. What is bad is, (like you pointed out) that most employees who are the consumers of those goods are paid in Zimbabwean dollars. What is also bad like you pointed out is that the pricing in US dollars is being done in a way that devalues the US dollar and yet it shouldn't be like that because the US dollar is an international trading currency that should have the same value worldwide.
Those who have US dollars in Zimbabwe are happy that they can buy whatever they want in US dollars, not knowing that they are being robbed of their hard currency by the grossly inflated US dollar prices that the Zimbabwean business people are setting for their goods and services. They will be better of if they were to use their hard currency in neighbouring countries like SA, Zambia, Botswana and Mozambique were the value of the US dollar is worth the international standard as a reserve currency.
Gono's economic knowledge credentials should be analysed, how can he allow such irregularities in the economy.
